A 21-year-old man was arrested in Hong Kong on Tuesday in connection with the alleged sexual assault of a 15-year-old girl he met online, police said. The case has raised concerns about the risks young people face when forming relationships on social media.
According to authorities, the suspect—identified only by the surname Lam—was taken into custody at his residence in the Wong Tai Sin district. He faces charges of “unlawful sexual intercourse with a girl under 16,” a crime under Hong Kong law. Lam, who works as a warehouse clerk, is scheduled to appear in West Kowloon Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday morning.
The investigation began on April 10, when a local woman reported to police that she suspected her 15-year-old daughter had been sexually assaulted at a hotel in Mong Kok. Officials said the two had connected through Instagram, though details about how their meeting was arranged remain unclear.
Police have not released further information about the victim or the circumstances leading up to the alleged assault. However, they emphasized that the case appears to involve “sexual grooming,” a pattern of behavior where offenders build trust with minors before exploiting them. In a statement, authorities urged young people to exercise caution when interacting with strangers online, while also calling on parents and peers to monitor children’s digital activity more closely.
“This case serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities young people face in the digital age,” a police spokesperson said. “Social media platforms can be powerful tools for connection, but they also create opportunities for predators to target minors.”
The arrest comes amid growing global attention to online safety, particularly regarding how easily minors can be manipulated through apps and websites. While Hong Kong has strict laws protecting children from sexual exploitation, advocates say more needs to be done to educate both parents and teenagers about the warning signs of grooming.
Lam remains in police custody pending his court appearance. If convicted, he could face significant prison time under Hong Kong’s criminal code, which treats sexual offenses involving minors with particular severity.
Police have not indicated whether additional suspects are being sought, but the investigation remains active. Authorities continue to review digital evidence and interview witnesses as they piece together the events leading up to the alleged assault.
