Hong Kong health authorities are investigating an outbreak of foodborne illness affecting nearly 40 students across two primary schools this week. The incident at Po Blood Hall Primary School and St. Jude’s Catholic Primary School raises renewed scrutiny of food safety within the city’s school lunch program, following previous, unrelated incidents in Kowloon Bay and Tsuen Wan [[1]], and a probe into a school lunch box supplier earlier this year [[2]]. Sailboat Catering Services, the supplier responsible for the affected lunches, has temporarily suspended operations as officials work to determine the source of the contamination.

Nearly 40 Students in Hong Kong Report Illness After Lunch

Hong Kong – Approximately 39 students from two primary schools in Hong Kong became ill after eating lunch provided by a catering company, prompting a temporary suspension of the supplier’s operations. The incident underscores growing concerns about food safety standards in school lunches.

Students from Po Blood Hall Primary School and St. Jude’s Catholic Primary School began experiencing discomfort after consuming lunch on Wednesday, according to reports. Symptoms included abdominal pain and diarrhea, but none of the students required hospitalization.

The meals were supplied by Sailboat Catering Services, which has temporarily halted operations to allow for a thorough cleaning and investigation. Authorities have not yet determined the exact cause of the illnesses, but an investigation is underway.

“The company is cooperating with authorities and will conduct a comprehensive cleaning of its facilities,” a spokesperson for Sailboat Catering Services said.

Health officials are currently examining food samples and interviewing students and staff to identify the source of the contamination. The case highlights the importance of rigorous food safety protocols for school catering services.

The schools have notified parents about the situation and are working with health authorities to ensure the well-being of all students. Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
