Los Angeles Residents Can Now Easily Submit Public Comment to City Council Online
Los Angeles residents can now more easily share their input on city matters through a streamlined online process for submitting public comment to the Los Angeles City Council, officials announced today.
The process, accessible through the City Clerk’s website, requires a council file number – such as 13-1493 or 13-1493-S12 – and a valid email address. Users can find the relevant file number by searching keywords related to the topic on LA City Clerk Connect or by contacting the City Clerk directly for assistance. After submitting a comment via the online form, residents must confirm their submission through an authorization email sent by the City Clerk; comments are not officially recorded until this confirmation step is completed.
In addition to submitting comments, residents can also subscribe to receive email updates on specific council files by clicking the envelope icon on the file’s page and selecting “Subscribe to all supplementals.” This feature allows citizens to stay informed about the progress of issues they care about, a crucial step in participatory democracy. The ability to easily track legislation is particularly important as the city faces ongoing debates about housing and development, as reported by the Los Angeles Times.
City officials encourage residents to keep their comments focused on the specific motion or action within the council file. A printable PDF guide to the process is also available for those who prefer a physical resource.
The City Clerk’s office stated that they anticipate this new system will increase public engagement and transparency in local government.
