More than 10,700 doses of the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine have been administered in Cuiabá, Brazil, marking significant progress in the city’s vaccination efforts for 2025. The increase in coverage, particularly among girls and young women, highlights the importance of continued vaccination to prevent HPV-related cancers and diseases.

Vaccination rates have also risen among boys in the same age group, with 5,116 doses administered, a result attributed to proactive outreach and awareness campaigns conducted by the municipality. Increasing vaccination rates in boys is crucial for achieving herd immunity and protecting the broader population.

National Vaccination Strategy

A national vaccination recovery strategy has further expanded protection to adolescents and young adults aged 15 to 19. Within this age group, 86.50% of females have been vaccinated, while efforts to increase coverage among males continue through initiatives at health centers and schools.

“The numbers reflect the strengthening of immunization policies,” said Danielle Carmona, the Municipal Secretary of Health, “and our focus is to ensure that children and adolescents have access to the vaccine.”

The HPV vaccine is a vital component of Brazil’s national immunization schedule and is essential in preventing various cancers, including cervical, penile, oral, throat, and anal cancers, as well as protecting against genital warts. The vaccine targets the types of HPV most commonly associated with these conditions.
