Hamburger SV travels to Augsburg on Saturday seeking a vital Bundesliga victory as both teams battle to avoid relegation.
Currently outside teh drop zone on goal difference, HSV faces a challenging match against an Augsburg side that could leapfrog them in the standings with a win-potentially sending the Hamburg club into a relegation playoff position.
Head Coach Merlin Polzin emphasized the need for his squad to execute their established style of play, despite several key injuries impacting team selection for the 3:30 PM CET kickoff.

A crucial match awaits Hamburger SV on Saturday at 3:30 PM CET as they travel to face FC Augsburg. A victory for HSV would extend their lead over Augsburg to five points in the Bundesliga standings. However, a loss would see their opponents leapfrog them in the relegation battle, and potentially drop HSV into the playoff spot by the end of the matchday. The stakes are high for both sides as they fight to avoid the drop.

“We’ve been praised for some good performances lately, but haven’t always gotten the points to show for it. I’m looking for the kind of performance that delivers three points,” said HSV Sporting Director Stefan Kuntz, emphasizing the need for a positive result after four consecutive league games without a win.

Polzin Focused on Distinctive Style of Play

Head Coach Merlin Polzin echoed that sentiment, stating, “For me, it’s clear that as HSV, we want to earn points through a specific style of football, one that we’ve been developing together for a year now. We want to be successful in our own way.” Polzin doesn’t view his team as the favorites heading into the contest. “We’re playing against a team that has been in the Bundesliga for 15 years. They have a clear advantage over us in that regard.”

Polzin warned of Augsburg’s “versatility” on the pitch. He dismissed the fact that Augsburg – like HSV – has only won two of their ten league games so far this season, stating, “You have to separate performance from results.” He believes HSV will only have a chance if they reach 100% of their potential both with and without the ball in Augsburg.

Three HSV Players Ruled Out for Augsburg Clash

Coach Polzin remained tight-lipped on Thursday regarding his starting lineup and personnel decisions. All national team players have returned to Hamburg, but Warmed Omari, Daniel Elfadli, and Yussuf Poulsen will miss the match due to injury. The rest of the squad is available for selection, including Fábio Vieira and Immanuel Pherai, who are both back from suspension.

Glatzel Also a Striking Option for Polzin

Will Vieira return to the starting eleven immediately? And will Ransford Königsdörffer get the nod up front? Polzin says both are still up in the air. He also mentioned Robert Glatzel as a potential option in the attack. A final decision will be made after Friday’s training session. Polzin stated, “I’m pleased that both are fit.”

Polzin also intends to have a conversation with Vieira about his disciplinary record. “He will be part of the squad for the weekend,” Polzin said. He spoke with the Portuguese player about the numerous cards and two red cards he’s received. Vieira is expected to make an impact with his playing ability going forward. “He can definitely make the difference. He’s shown that in games and consistently in training,” Polzin added, but stopped short of guaranteeing him a starting spot.
