Huawei is preparing to shake up the entry-level laptop market with the official reveal of the MateBook 14 HarmonyOS Edition, a device designed to compete directly with the Apple MacBook Neo. Scheduled for release on April 20, 2026, the new laptop aims to outperform its Apple rival by offering significantly higher memory and expanded connectivity.

A High-Spec Alternative to the MacBook Neo

While early reports from Digital Chat Station suggested the device might be called the MateBook Neo, Huawei has confirmed the laptop will arrive as the MateBook 14 HarmonyOS Edition. The device is expected to feature a Kirin X90A chipset—previously utilized in the MatePad Edge—paired with 24 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage. This represents a substantial leap in memory compared to the Apple MacBook Neo, which is limited to 8 GB of unified memory and storage options of either 256 GB or 512 GB.

Design and Connectivity Advantages

Beyond internal specifications, Huawei is focusing on hardware versatility. The MateBook 14 HarmonyOS Edition appears to feature thinner display bezels than Apple’s offering and introduces a unique design choice with rounded keycaps.

Connectivity is another key area where Huawei is attempting to surpass Apple. On the left-hand side alone, the MateBook 14 includes:

  • HDMI port
  • USB Type-A
  • USB Type-C
  • 3.5 mm audio jack

This stands in stark contrast to the Apple MacBook Neo, which has been criticized for its limited physical connectivity and the omission of a backlit keyboard.

Apple’s Budget Play: The MacBook Neo

Apple’s MacBook Neo, which began shipping on March 11, 2026, targets students and budget-conscious buyers with a price point currently ranging between $589 and $599 on Amazon. The 13-inch laptop utilizes a fanless aluminum chassis and is powered by the Apple A18 Pro processor (6 cores/6 threads).

Despite its premium build and silent operation, the MacBook Neo makes several compromises to maintain its price. It features a 60 Hz glossy IPS display with a resolution of 2408 x 1506 and limited port selection, consisting of USB-C with Power Delivery and DisplayPort support, alongside one USB 2.0 and one USB 3.1 Gen2 port.

The rivalry between these two devices highlights a strategic divide in the budget laptop space: Apple is leaning on the efficiency of the A18 Pro and a minimalist ecosystem, while Huawei is positioning itself as the high-performance, feature-rich alternative for users who require more memory and legacy port support.
