Hurricane Melissa Prompts Evacuation of Guantanamo Bay, Disrupts Naval Operations

A powerful hurricane has forced the evacuation of non-essential personnel and the repositioning of several U.S. Navy ships operating in the Caribbean Sea, as of today, October 28, 2025.

Approximately 1,000 non-essential workers and military family members were evacuated from Naval Station Guantanamo Bay ahead of Hurricane Melissa’s arrival, according to officials. The evacuation included the transport of pets to Naval Air Station Pensacola in Florida, where support is being provided. NAS Pensacola is assisting with housing and care for those displaced by the storm. This large-scale evacuation highlights the logistical challenges of maintaining operations in hurricane-prone regions.

Several Navy ships deployed to the Caribbean for unspecified missions have also been moved to safer locations to avoid the storm’s path. The War Zone reports that the repositioning of these assets is a precautionary measure to protect personnel and valuable equipment. The National Hurricane Center provides detailed information on current hurricane conditions and forecasts.

Officials stated that the focus remains on ensuring the safety of all personnel and minimizing disruption to ongoing operations. Further updates will be provided as the situation develops and the storm’s trajectory becomes clearer.
