Austrian mobile and fixed-line operator Hutchison Drei is streamlining its business operations, announcing its exit from the server colocation market by the end of Q1 2026. The company will transfer its operations at the key network hub at Wiener Heiligenstädter Lände 27c to business ISP next layer, ensuring continuity of service for its more than 100 corporate clients. This move allows Drei to focus on its core telecommunications services while next layer expands its Vienna footprint and cloud service capabilities.
Hutchison Drei Austria, a leading mobile and fixed-line operator, is exiting the server colocation business to focus on its core operations. The company will discontinue its housing services by the end of the first quarter of 2026. However, its more than 100 corporate clients will not need to relocate their servers, as Drei is transferring the location at Wiener Heiligenstädter Lände 27c, along with its customers, to business ISP next layer.

The site, formerly the Ö3 media center, has a long history as a key network hub in Austria. Currently, in addition to Drei and next layer, market leader A1 Telekom Austria, Deutsche Telekom through Magenta Austria, Türk Telekom, the city-owned network operators Wien Energie/Wiener Netze, Cablerunner Austria, Colt, euNetworks, and EXA Infrastructure are also connected there.
The acquisition will give next layer its fourth location in Vienna. The provider, which is owned by its management team, has announced plans to invest in the site, including expanding its existing fiber-optic connections with multiple redundancies. Additional direct connections to other networks are also planned.
Expanding Cooling Capacity for Cloud Services
The building was one of the first in Vienna to connect to the district cooling network, a power-saving cooling method that next layer plans to utilize more extensively. Initially, the existing servers will benefit, followed by additional infrastructure. The Heiligenstädter Lände location will then be used to provide redundant cloud services, which next layer currently offers at three locations in Vienna and one in Frankfurt am Main.
Drei’s customers are being informed of the transition and next layer is offering them access to its service plans. This may include technical upgrades, as next layer’s Ethernet services begin with a Gigabit bandwidth, and IPv6 and redundant connections are offered at no extra cost.
Drei is part of 3Group Europe and a subsidiary of CK Hutchison Holdings Limited, based in Hong Kong. The company confirmed that its cloud and hosting portfolio for Austrian customers will not be affected by this change.
