Hydro Reports Strong Financial Results, Announces Bonuses for Employees
Norwegian aluminum and renewable energy company Hydro reported significant financial gains across several of its operations, leading to bonus payouts for employees. The company’s Sunndal plant, Europe’s largest primary aluminum plant, contributed to a collective surplus of nearly 1.2 billion Norwegian kroner (approximately $115 million USD), according to Grenda.
The positive results extend beyond Sunndal, with Hydro Karmøy as well achieving record performance. Radio Haugaland reported strong results and a new record for the Karmøy plant, which produces primary aluminum and wire rod.
Hydro Sunndal’s performance is particularly noteworthy given its proximity to the Aura hydroelectric power plant, which is slated for a major upgrade. Statkraft is planning a 6 billion NOK (approximately $590 million USD) investment to expand the Aura plant’s capacity by 2.5 times its current maximum. The Aura plant has been contributing to electricity production in the Møre og Romsdal region since 1953 and is a key energy source for the energy-intensive aluminum production at Hydro Sunndal.
Employees at Hydro Sunndal are set to receive a bonus as a result of the company’s strong performance, opp.no reported, though the exact amount of the bonus remains undisclosed. Aura Avis also reported on the anticipated bonus, noting that the amount is yet to be determined. Aura Avis
Hydro operates 16 locations in Norway and employed 4,009 people in the country as of 2025, generating 82,294 million Norwegian kroner in revenue, according to company filings. The company also operates 17 hydroelectric power stations in Norway, producing approximately 9 terawatt hours of electricity annually. These results underscore the importance of Norway’s hydropower resources to Hydro’s aluminum production and its broader renewable energy strategy.
