Ex-Lostprophets Singer Ian Watkins Killed in Prison
Ian Watkins, the former lead singer of the Welsh rock band Lostprophets, was fatally attacked in a British prison yesterday, serving a 29-year sentence for multiple counts of child sexual assault.
Watkins, 48, had his throat slashed while leaving his cell Saturday morning, according to sources, with the attack described as “brutal” and “shocking, even by prison standards.” South Wales Police have confirmed an investigation is underway and two individuals have been apprehended in connection with the murder. This incident highlights the dangers faced by high-profile offenders within the prison system.
Joanne Mjadzelics, Watkins’ former girlfriend who played a key role in bringing his crimes to light, expressed relief at his death. “I was always waiting for this phone call,” Mjadzelics told reporters. “He was walking around with a target on his back from the first day he entered the prison. I expected it to have happened earlier.” She added, “This is a relief… I wanted him dead for a long time after everything he did.” Watkins was arrested in 2012 following a police search of his home that uncovered a significant amount of child pornography and bestiality material, corroborating years of reports made by Mjadzelics to authorities. Prior to his death, Watkins was previously attacked in 2023, held hostage and beaten for over six hours due to a reported drug debt. His conviction in 2013, and subsequent attempt to block his appeal due to the “shocking depravity” of his crimes, as reported by The Independent, brought attention to the severity of his offenses. Authorities are continuing their investigation and expect to release further details as they become available.
