Residents of IJsselstein have expressed growing concern over the planned opening of a refugee reception center on a local football field, citing rising tensions and fears about safety in the community.

The decision to house between 100 and 150 asylum seekers at the IJFC sports complex for up to six months was made by municipal officials following pressure from the state asylum minister. Construction of temporary housing units is set to initiate later this month, with the first residents expected to arrive in approximately four weeks.

Local authorities say they have informed the football club, other park users, and nearby residents about the plans. Ongoing discussions are underway with the Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA) and IJFC regarding practical matters such as field adjustments and grass restoration after the occupants depart.

Officials also confirmed they are working with COA to arrange supportive services for the asylum seekers, including access to education and daytime activities.

While the municipality frames the initiative as a contribution to national efforts to shelter displaced persons, some residents have voiced anxiety and frustration. Reports indicate that protests have emerged, including social media backlash, banners with confrontational messages, and announcements of planned demonstrations.

One resident described feeling unsettled by the changing atmosphere in the town, noting unfamiliar faces at recent gatherings related to the issue.

The mayor acknowledged public unease, saying he understands the decision raises questions and concerns, and pledged continued dialogue with neighbors and stakeholders through collaboration with COA.
