A crucial meeting to finalize Indonesia’s 2026 Commodity Balance was postponed Tuesday after key ministerial attendees were unable to participate, highlighting ongoing challenges in coordinating economic policy across the archipelago. Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs Zulkifli Hasan adjourned the session as ministers were occupied with previously scheduled commitments ranging from regional travel to disaster response. The delay underscores the complex logistical hurdles facing President Joko Widodo’s administration as it seeks to stabilize food prices and ensure national food security ahead of the 2026 planning cycle.

A key meeting regarding Indonesia’s 2026 Commodity Balance was postponed Tuesday after no relevant ministers were able to attend, according to Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs Zulkifli Hasan. The meeting, originally scheduled to begin at 2:00 PM local time, was delayed as key government officials were unavailable.

The postponement underscores the logistical challenges of coordinating economic policy across multiple government agencies. The session was to be held in the Main Meeting Room of the Coordinating Ministry for Food Affairs in Central Jakarta.

Officials from various ministries and institutions had already gathered at the scheduled meeting time, but none of the expected ministers were present. After approximately 30 minutes, the meeting room was opened and several attendees departed.

Hasan explained that the meeting was adjourned due to the absence of the technical ministers. “I was having a meeting on the Commodity Balance, but none of the ministers came. I suspended it, as no one was present,” he said. He noted that Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman was in Papua, Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita was reportedly abroad, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Sakti Wahyu Trenggono was scheduled to attend later, and Trade Minister Budi Santoso was dealing with disaster relief efforts.

“I have asked the echelon I officials from the relevant ministries and institutions to meet again tomorrow to align on decisions and determine when the technical ministers will be available to hold the 2026 Commodity Balance meeting,” Hasan stated. “For now, no decisions have been made; it’s suspended until they can determine a date.”

Only senior officials from each ministry and institution attended the meeting. Present were Head of the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Agriculture Suwandi, Secretary-General of the National Food Agency Sarwo Edy, and Director-General of Agro Industry at the Ministry of Industry Putu Juli Ardika.

The delayed meeting highlights the importance of inter-agency coordination in Indonesia’s food security and economic planning. Hasan directed the senior officials to reconvene to reach a consensus and schedule a future meeting with the participation of the relevant ministers.

“So I asked the echelon I officials to meet again to align on what is needed, and when the ministers can come. So not yet (a decision), suspended until they can determine,” he concluded.
