Apple has released iOS 26.3 for iPhones and iPads. One of the most notable changes is a new tool that simplifies switching from iOS to Android.
The wait for a smoother transition between iOS and Android is over. Starting with iOS 26.3, the functionality is now built into Apple’s mobile operating system, thanks to the European Union, which mandated the change through the Digital Markets Act (DMA).
Specifically, iOS 26.3 includes a new transfer tool to move data such as apps, messages, photos, and even phone numbers by simply placing your iPhone and Android phone side-by-side. This represents a significant improvement over the previous process, which required downloading separate transfer tools on both Android and iOS. Not all data, including app data, was previously transferred.
Some limitations still exist. Health data, paired Bluetooth devices, and other ‘protected items’ will not be transferred. However, Apple and Google have promised that more file types and items will be supported in the future. To apply the tool, navigate to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Move to Android in iOS 26.3.
iOS Notifications on Third-Party Smartwatches
Another change iOS users may notice is the arrival of ‘notification forwarding’ for smartwatches from other brands. This means you can now see iOS notifications on smartwatches made by companies other than Apple.
However, there is a caveat: activating this feature will disable notifications on an Apple Watch. But the likelihood of wearing both an Apple Watch and a wearable from another brand simultaneously is low.
Apple emphasizes that this introduces a potential privacy risk, as shared notifications may contain information from emails, WhatsApp messages, and potentially even medical data – information some users may prefer to keep private. It’s worth noting, however, that connecting a smartwatch to an Android phone also involves sharing this type of data.
New Pairing Mechanism for Earbuds and Smartwatches
The ‘new’ pairing mechanism in iOS 26.3 also stems from European regulations. Or rather, it’s a feature Apple has used for years to quickly connect Apple Watches and AirPods to iPhones.
That technology is now becoming available for smartwatches and wireless earbuds or headphones from other brands. This move represents another step toward greater interoperability within iOS. The update underscores the increasing pressure on tech giants to open up their ecosystems.
It’s clear that iOS 26.3 is largely an update designed to satisfy the EU. The key change: features previously reserved for Apple’s own devices are now accessible to devices from other companies. This is welcome news for iPhone users who want more choice.
How to Install iOS 26.3 on Your iPhone
iOS 26.3 is available for your iPhone immediately. To install the update, travel to Settings > General > Software Update. You can download and install the update through that menu.
We recommend doing this over Wi-Fi. On our iPhone 16 Pro Max, the update weighs a substantial 10.91 GB.
