The White House announced Thursday that Iranian authorities reportedly halted plans for 800 executions of protesters, a move that comes after increased pressure from the Trump administration amid ongoing unrest in the country. The planned executions, if carried out, would have represented a dramatic escalation in the government’s crackdown on demonstrations sparked by worsening economic conditions. While Iranian officials deny the claims, the U.S. maintains all options-including military action-remain on the table should the killing of protesters continue.

The White House announced Thursday that Iranian authorities have reportedly halted plans for 800 executions of protesters, following pressure from the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump. The move comes amid widespread demonstrations and a crackdown by the Iranian government.

“The President understands today that 800 executions that were scheduled and were to take place yesterday have been called off,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters on Thursday, January 15th, according to the AFP news agency.

Despite the reported halt in executions, Leavitt indicated that military options remain on the table for Trump.

“All options remain open to the president,” the White House official said, adding that Trump had warned Tehran of “serious consequences” if the killing of protesters continued.

The Iranian government had previously dismissed claims of planned executions amid the ongoing protests.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated on Wednesday, January 15th, that there were no plans to carry out death sentences against protesters. He made the statement during an interview with U.S. media outlet Fox News.

“There will be no executions, today or tomorrow. I can say with certainty, there are no plans to carry out any executions at all,” said the Iranian Foreign Minister.

Araghchi’s remarks followed a statement by Trump that Washington was prepared to take “very strong action” if Iran executed protesters. Both Trump and other U.S. officials have recently increased their rhetoric against the Iranian government, as protests continue due to the country’s worsening economic conditions.

During the interview, Araghchi also claimed that the situation in Iran had returned to control and that the government was “fully in control.” He described the unrest as part of what he characterized as a large-scale terrorist operation.

Iranian officials have previously accused the United States and Israel of supporting what they call “riots” and “terrorist acts” during the wave of protests.
