Iran is conducting military exercises near the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz amid heightened threats of potential U.S. strikes, following the deployment of American naval assets to the Middle East. The exercises come as tensions escalate between Washington and Tehran.

Prior to the live-fire drills, Iranian authorities issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) on Tuesday, January 27th, citing military activity involving live ordnance in the airspace over the Strait of Hormuz, according to reports from Anadolu Agency.

The NOTAM detailed the live-fire exercises as part of a larger military training operation.

The Iranian military activity is scheduled to take place between January 27th and January 29th within a circular area with a radius of five nautical miles, or 9.2 kilometers.

The notice further stated that the airspace within the designated area, from ground level up to 25,000 feet, would be restricted and declared a danger zone during the exercises.

Iran’s military exercises near the Strait of Hormuz coincide with similar drills conducted by the U.S. Air Force in the Middle East over the past several days.

The U.S. Air Forces Central Command (AFCENT) announced on Sunday, January 25th, that its forces were conducting military readiness exercises throughout the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) area of responsibility in the Middle East.

Officials stated the exercises were intended to demonstrate the ability to rapidly deploy and sustain combat air power in the region.

Tensions between the U.S. and Iran have risen following a crackdown on protesters involved in anti-government demonstrations in several Iranian cities earlier this month, resulting in thousands of deaths and tens of thousands of arrests.

Earlier this month, President Donald Trump reportedly came close to ordering strikes against Iranian regime targets in response to the deaths of the protesters. He ultimately delayed the decision while also deploying additional U.S. military assets to the region.

The U.S. has maintained that all options, including military action, remain on the table regarding Iran. Iranian officials have warned that any U.S. attack would trigger a “swift and comprehensive” response. The situation underscores the potential for miscalculation and further escalation in a region already grappling with multiple conflicts.
