Iranian parliament speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf said on Tuesday that nuclear talks with the United States have made progress but significant disagreements remain, casting doubt on the likelihood of a final agreement in the near term. Speaking to reporters in Tehran, Qalibaf acknowledged that negotiations between Iran and the U.S. Have advanced, describing the discussions as productive in some areas. However, he emphasized that core differences persist, particularly over uranium enrichment levels and sanctions relief, which continue to hinder a comprehensive deal. “The talks have moved forward, but we are still far from a final agreement,” Qalibaf said. “Substantial gaps remain on key issues, and bridging them will require serious concessions from both sides.” His remarks come amid ongoing indirect talks mediated by Oman, which have been held intermittently since April. Although both Washington and Tehran have expressed cautious optimism about the possibility of reviving the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), hardliners in Iran have repeatedly warned against making unilateral concessions. Qalibaf also addressed regional security concerns, asserting that Iran maintains full control over the Strait of Hormuz, a vital maritime chokepoint through which roughly 20% of global oil shipments pass. He dismissed foreign military presence in the area as ineffective and reiterated Tehran’s ability to ensure safe passage for commercial vessels under its supervision. “The strait is under our complete command,” he stated. “No foreign power can dictate terms there.” The comments follow recent Iranian military exercises in the Gulf and heightened rhetoric from hardline factions accusing the U.S. Of violating Iranian airspace and maritime boundaries. Iranian officials have repeatedly warned that any aggressive action would be met with a decisive response. While diplomatic channels remain open, analysts note that internal political divisions in both countries — coupled with upcoming elections in Iran and shifting foreign policy priorities in Washington — make a breakthrough increasingly uncertain. For now, the path to a renewed nuclear accord appears stalled, with technical and political hurdles proving difficult to overcome.
