TEHERAN — Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, is reportedly preparing a contingency plan to relocate to Russia should ongoing nationwide protests escalate further. The possibility of the 86-year-old Khamenei leaving the country highlights the increasing instability within Iran and its potential impact on regional power dynamics.

According to reports from the British newspaper The Times, the plan, dubbed “Plan B,” would involve Khamenei and approximately 20 close associates, including family members and aides.

The plan also encompasses provisions for transferring control of his extensive network of assets, estimated at around $95 billion, according to a 2013 Reuters investigation cited by The Times. These assets include Setad, a highly influential Iranian organization, and a system of charitable foundations linked to the Ayatollah, known for their opaque financial dealings.

“‘Plan B’ is for Khamenei and his inner circle, including his son and potential heir, Mojtaba,” sources with intelligence knowledge told The Times.

Former Israeli intelligence official Beni Sabti reportedly stated that Russia is seen as Khamenei’s only viable destination, saying, “there is nowhere else for him to go.” The development underscores growing regional tensions and the potential for further geopolitical shifts.
