A suspect in the death of 80-year-old Irene Winkel in Amsterdam has been released from custody with an electronic monitoring tag, authorities announced Wednesday, April 29, 2026. The case, which involved a “babbeltruc” or confidence trick, has drawn significant attention in the Netherlands.
Ben H., 24, is accused of calling Winkel and falsely claiming she was on a list of potential burglary victims, stating a police officer would visit to check her security. Following the call, Oussama El G., 21, allegedly went to Winkel’s home posing as law enforcement. A confrontation ensued when Winkel became suspicious and asked him to leave, leading to a violent attack and her death.
According to reports, H. Has declined to build a statement to investigators. The Public Prosecutor’s Office did not object to his release. A third suspect had previously been released and El G. Remains in custody as the primary suspect.
The next preparatory hearing in the case is scheduled for July 1. The release of H. With an electronic tag underscores the complexities of pre-trial detention decisions, even in cases involving serious crimes.
