Washington and Moscow have engaged in extensive discussions regarding Iran’s nuclear program and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, according to statements released Wednesday, April 29, 2026. The conversations, which lasted for over 90 minutes, signal a rare point of convergence between the two nations on the issue of preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
U.S. President Donald Trump revealed that Russian President Vladimir Putin offered assistance with Iran’s enriched uranium stockpiles during their phone call. “He wants to help,” Trump told CNN’s Kaitlan Collins in the Oval Office. “I said, before you help me, I aim for to end your war.”
Putin reportedly suggested ideas for resolving the dispute surrounding Iran’s nuclear program, and also proposed a temporary ceasefire in Ukraine to coincide with the anniversary of the end of World War II. Trump described the conversation with Putin as “remarkably quality,” and indicated that a resolution to the conflict in Ukraine could be reached “relatively quickly.”
The Kremlin confirmed the call, stating that Putin and Trump had a “frank and practical” exchange focusing on the Middle East, particularly the Iranian issue, and the situation in Ukraine. Yuri Ushakov, an aide to the Russian President, noted that Putin considered Trump’s decision to extend a ceasefire with Iran to be “correct,” as it allows for negotiations and contributes to stability.
Trump further stated that Putin “does not want Iran to have a nuclear weapon,” and expressed willingness to collaborate on the matter. This development underscores a surprising alignment of interests between Washington and Moscow regarding Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
During the call, Trump also highlighted the success of U.S. Efforts to curtail Iran’s military capabilities, claiming that his administration had “destroyed over 80% of Iran’s missile capabilities.” He also stated, “We have 159 Iranian ships at the bottom of the sea,” a claim that reflects escalating rhetoric from the U.S. Administration. The announcement could influence future diplomatic talks and regional security dynamics.
The lengthy discussion between the two leaders also touched upon the situation in Ukraine, with Trump expressing his belief that an agreement to end the conflict is imminent. Putin, however, maintained that Russian forces “hold the initiative” on the ground.
Putin also reportedly offered his support to Trump following a recent assassination attempt, strongly condemning the incident.
