A Saudi woman’s public plea for guidance after discovering her husband’s second marriage is sparking conversation about the practice of polygamy within Islamic legal frameworks and its emotional toll on families. A woman in Saudi Arabia is grappling with the discovery that her husband has taken a second wife, prompting her to question the future of her 25-year marriage. The case highlights the complexities of polygamy within the context of Islamic law and its impact on families.
The woman, identified as “Um Ryan” and calling from the city of Khamis Mushayt, shared her distress during an appearance on the Saudi channel’s “Fatwa” program. She explained that she and her husband have eight children together, and she recently learned of his additional marriage just over a month ago.
“I have tried to accept the situation, but I can’t,” Um Ryan said, adding that the revelation has caused her significant emotional and physical strain, requiring multiple visits to the hospital.
Responding to her question, Sheikh Dr. Jabreel Al-Bassili explained that Islamic law permits a Muslim man to marry up to four wives, but only under the condition that he treats them all justly, citing the Quranic verse: “So marry women of your choice, two or three or four. But if you fear that you cannot do justice to them, then marry only one.”
Al-Bassili emphasized that the key requirement for polygamy is a firm commitment to fairness and equity, and a genuine belief in one’s ability to avoid injustice. He advised Um Ryan to remain steadfast in her faith and accept God’s law, cautioning that seeking a divorce could disrupt the family and harm their children.
The sheikh pointed to the example of the Prophet Muhammad and his companions, who also practiced polygamy, stating that “a wise and insightful woman will be patient, accept God’s will, and fulfill her obligations.”
Al-Bassili concluded by saying that those who uphold their duties to God and their families will be granted relief and provision in unexpected ways, referencing the Quranic verse: “And whoever fears Allah – He will make for him a way out and provide for him from where he does not expect.”
