Doctor Warns Against Regular Use of Sleeping Pills

A leading NHS general practitioner has cautioned against the routine use of sleeping pills, citing potential for addiction and diminished sleep quality.

Speaking on his podcast, No Appointment Necessary, Dr. Amir Khan responded to a question about the use of medication for sleep, stating, “I would say never. Never, ever use sleeping tablets.” While acknowledging rare exceptions for acute situations like bereavement or trauma, he emphasized that prescriptions should not exceed one week due to the risk of dependence and tolerance. He explained that relying on medication can prevent individuals from achieving the restorative deep REM sleep necessary for feeling refreshed.

Dr. Khan strongly advocates for cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) as a primary treatment for insomnia, and suggests that some individuals may benefit from psychiatric evaluation to address underlying causes of sleep disturbance. Poor sleep is linked to a range of health problems, including increased risk of cardiovascular disease and mental health issues, making effective treatment crucial. He also shared a technique called “cognitive shuffling” – mentally listing names for each letter of the alphabet – as a simple, medication-free method to calm the mind before bed. The NHS advises adults need 7-9 hours of sleep, and urges those experiencing persistent insomnia to consult a doctor, particularly if it impacts daily life. You can find further guidance and support on the NHS website. Officials stated that they will continue to promote non-pharmacological approaches to sleep management.
