Nigerian Photographer J.D. ‘Okhai Ojeikere’s Work Receives Landmark Recognition in Lagos

A major exhibition and masterclass held at ART X Lagos is bringing renewed attention to the work of J.D. ‘Okhai Ojeikere, a celebrated Nigerian photographer whose artistry was largely overlooked in his home country during his lifetime.

The exhibition, titled “An Exacting Eye,” featured 150 previously unseen photographs from Ojeikere’s extensive archive, showcased at Africa’s premier art fair. Curator Missla Libsekal described Ojeikere’s photography as “poetry,” noting, “the way he saw the world and how he transformed that perception into an image is quite remarkable.” The event also included a masterclass led by his son, Amaize Ojeikere, focusing on archiving and the photographer’s unique approach. This increased visibility is particularly significant as Nigeria continues to develop its own art market and cultural institutions.

Ojeikere, who passed away in 2014, spent over 60 years documenting Nigerian life, with his “Hairstyles” series becoming his most recognizable work. ART X Lagos founder Tokini Peterside-Schwebig explained the importance of the exhibition, stating, “It is about ensuring our young people know the artists and teachers who shaped our visual language.” Amaize Ojeikere emphasized the importance of preserving the past, saying, “It’s very important that different generations are able to preserve what existed in their time for others to see, because there’s so much to learn from the past.” The archive contains “thousands and thousands of negatives,” offering a rich resource for future study and appreciation of Nigerian history and culture; you can learn more about photographic archiving techniques at the Library of Congress.

A selection of Ojeikere’s work will remain on display at the Federal Palace Hotel lobby until the end of November. Officials stated that plans are underway to establish institutions dedicated to preserving and showcasing the full extent of Ojeikere’s legacy, ensuring his work is accessible to a wider audience for generations to come. ART X Lagos continues to play a vital role in promoting Nigerian art and artists on the global stage.
