Jagiellonia Białystok delivered a stunning performance in Florence, securing a victory over Serie A side Fiorentina that will be remembered by fans. Despite facing a significant challenge after a 0-3 defeat in the first leg, the Polish club pushed their Italian opponents all the way.
Jagiellonia entered the second leg in Italy with their work cut out for them, widely considered underdogs. However, coach Adrian Siemieniec maintained belief in his team. – “Our situation before the rematch is extremely difficult, but these things happen in football” – he stated last week.
Mazurek Shines in Italy
That belief proved well-placed, as Bartosz Mazurek emerged as the hero for Jagiellonia. The club’s academy product had only scored one goal in the first team prior to the match, against Widzew Łódź last month. In Florence, however, he completed a hat-trick, leveling the tie and giving his side a chance to advance. This performance marks a significant moment in the young player’s career.

Fiorentina ultimately secured their progression to the Round of 16 with goals from Nicolo Fagioli and Moise Kean in extra time. Jesus Imaz pulled one back for the visitors, but it wasn’t enough to prevent the Italian side from advancing.
Following the match, Adrian Siemieniec expressed immense pride in his players’ performance. – “The most important thing for me is that Florence will remember not only my name, but also Jagiellonia. We will remember this team and this match, even though our adventure in European competitions ends today,” he told reporters.
Adrian Siemieniec: “We Wrote a Beautiful Story”
The coach acknowledged how close his team came to achieving a remarkable result. – “We certainly have nothing to be ashamed of today. I am very proud of this team, the level they have reached, and what they did here. We were a step away from something incredible. I think we wrote a beautiful story with this match that will be remembered not only in Białystok, but throughout Polish football” – Siemieniec added.
Siemieniec was particularly impressed with the performance of Bartosz Mazurek. – “We have a story where ‘Mazi’ comes on as a substitute, ends the match on the wing, scores goals… A 19-year-old who has only played a dozen or so matches at senior level is taking the ball home from Florence today. No matter how his story unfolds, no one can take that away from him. I preserve my fingers crossed and believe that this was his first step” – he stated.
Jagiellonia’s European campaign has come to an end, but the team can hold their heads high after a spirited showing. They now turn their attention to the Polish league, where they will face Legia Warszawa on March 1st at 2:45 PM. Stay tuned to Sport.pl and the Sport.pl LIVE app for live coverage of the match.
