Sinner to Lose No. 1 Ranking to Alcaraz Despite Paris Masters Victory

Jannik Sinner will briefly return to the top of the ATP rankings today, but Carlos Alcaraz is poised to regain the No. 1 spot next Monday, setting up a dramatic showdown at the upcoming ATP Finals in Turin to determine the year-end No. 1.

Sinner secured his return to No. 1 following his victory at the Paris Masters, temporarily surpassing Alcaraz, who had held the position for nearly two months. However, the ATP rankings system dictates that points earned at last year’s ATP Finals will expire next week. Sinner will lose 1,500 points from his 2023 championship win, while Alcaraz will only drop 200 points from his group stage performance. This shift will result in Alcaraz leading with 11,050 points to Sinner’s 10,000. The battle for the top ranking highlights the intense rivalry between the two young stars and underscores the importance of consistent performance throughout the season.

Despite the impending rankings change, Alcaraz will be seeded No. 1 at the ATP Finals due to his lead in the “Race to Turin” standings, which only consider points accumulated within the current calendar year. Currently, the top five players—Alexander Zverev, Taylor Fritz, Novak Djokovic, and Sinner—trail significantly behind Alcaraz and Sinner, making a challenge for the top spot unlikely. To secure the year-end No. 1 ranking, Sinner needs to win the ATP Finals and hope Alcaraz doesn’t reach the final, while Alcaraz needs to win three matches at the tournament. Aryna Sabalenka has already clinched the year-end No. 1 ranking on the WTA tour. Officials stated the draw for the ATP Finals is scheduled for Thursday, and the final qualifying spots remain uncertain, with Felix Auger-Aliassime and Lorenzo Musetti vying for the last position.
