An artist has added a poignant touch to a statue of Argentine national hero José de San Martín following a visit by President Javier Milei that sparked controversy. The sculpture, located in San Lorenzo, now features a single blue tear painted on the face of the historical figure.

Rosario-based artist Joaquines created the artwork in response to Milei’s Saturday visit to the Santa Fe province and the subsequent debate surrounding the return of the “sable corvo” – San Martín’s sword – to the Granaderos Regiment. Joaquines shared images of the intervention on social media, using only a sword and crying face emoji as commentary.

This isn’t the first time Joaquines has used this symbolic gesture. Several months ago, the artist added a tear to a statue of Manuel Belgrano at the Monument to the Flag, accompanied by the message, “Perdón por este presente, no te merecemos” – “Forgive us for this present, you don’t deserve it.”

The artwork appeared following commemorations marking the 213th anniversary of the Battle of San Lorenzo, an event that has recently become a focal point of political discussion. The controversy centers on President Milei’s decision to return San Martín’s sword to the Granaderos Regiment, a move that has drawn criticism from historians and political figures regarding the artifact’s proper care and location.

The artist’s intervention is being interpreted as a statement on the event and the handling of Argentina’s foundational symbols. The gesture, described as minimal but impactful, reflects a broader conversation about national identity and historical preservation.
