The first teaser for Kaatalan, a large-scale action thriller from Cube Entertainment, has been unveiled. The launch took place at a grand ceremony at the Veenithaa Theatre in Kochi, attended by fans, media, and invited guests. Initial screenings of the teaser were met with an enthusiastic response from audiences.
The teaser showcases thrilling action sequences, hinting that the film will feature fight choreography unlike anything previously seen in Malayalam cinema. A particularly striking scene depicts the film’s lead, Antony Varghese, in a confrontation with an elephant. According to a disclaimer included with the teaser, the scene was filmed using a real elephant, with no visual effects employed.
The teaser suggests that Antony Varghese’s role will be one of his most impactful and dynamic to date. Kaatalan is slated for a worldwide theatrical release on May 14, and is expected to be one of the biggest Malayalam film releases ever. The film marks the directorial debut of Paul George.
Action sequences for the film were choreographed in Thailand by Kecha Kembackdy, renowned for his work on international action thrillers like the Ong-Bak series, and his team. “Pong,” the elephant that gained prominence in the Ong-Bak films, also appears in Kaatalan, featured prominently in the teaser’s intense elephant encounter. The film’s music, composed by Ajaneesh Loknath – known for his work on the Kannada blockbusters Kantara and Maharaja – is also highlighted in the teaser. The combination of stunning visuals, action, and music positions Kaatalan as a high-octane action thriller.
The film has already secured one of the largest overseas deals in the history of Malayalam cinema, and reports indicate it has broken several pre-release records even before shooting is complete. Faris Films is collaborating on what is shaping up to be a massive international release for Malayalam cinema. This project comes from Cube Entertainment and producer Sheriff Mohammed, following their previous success with the pan-Indian action thriller Marco. The first-look poster, featuring Antony Varghese’s stylish look, previously went viral on social media.
Being presented as a pan-Indian film, Kaatalan is being produced on a grand scale. The cast includes Duushaara Vijayan in the female lead, alongside Telugu stars Sunil (known for Pushpa and Jailer), Kabir Duhan Singh (who previously appeared in Marco), and Raj Tirandasu (also from Pushpa). Bollywood actor Parth Thivare, who starred in the hit film Kill, and Malayalam actors Jagadeesh, Siddique, Hanansha (a vlogger and singer), Baby Jean (a rapper), and Hipster also feature in key roles. The screenplay is by Joby Varghese, Paul George, and Jero Jacob, with dialogue written by Unni R.
The film will be released in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi.
