PRAGUE – Police and customs officials raided the home of Czech mixed martial artist Karlos Vémola on Wednesday, according to reports. The incident raises questions about potential criminal activity within the country’s sports community.
National Drug Control Center spokesperson Lucie Šmoldasová confirmed that three individuals were detained in connection with suspected drug-related offenses – two in Prague and one in the Central Bohemian Region. Šmoldasová stated that no formal charges have been filed at this time. Media reports indicate that Vémola was among those detained.
“We detained two individuals in Prague, and a further person later in the Central Bohemian Region, all on suspicion of drug-related criminal activity. No one has been charged yet,” Šmoldasová said. She added that investigative procedures are ongoing.
Martina Kaňková, a spokesperson for the Czech Customs Administration, stated that customs officials provided assistance to the police at their request, but offered no further details.
Karel “Karlos” Vémola is a prominent figure in Czech martial arts, being the first Czech athlete to compete in the Ultimate Fighting Championship. The former bodybuilder and wrestler, who turned 40 this year, holds multiple titles in the middleweight and light heavyweight divisions in both Czech and British organizations.
According to reports, Vémola was previously convicted of a drug offense in the United Kingdom.
