Many parents facing a cancer diagnosis grapple with how to talk to their children. Balancing the desire to protect them from worry with the require for honesty is a difficult challenge. For Princess Kate (44), following her cancer diagnosis, it was important that her children understand she was unwell. Insights into this deeply personal time are revealed in journalist and author Russell Myers’ book, «William & Catherine: The Intimate Inside Story.»

Tears Were Shed

Princess Kate’s life, and that of her family, changed abruptly when she underwent abdominal surgery in January 2024. Throughout the ordeal, both Kate and Prince William (44) prioritized their children. According to a close confidant featured in the book, “They explained to the three young children what was happening and how long Catherine would be away, but also that everything else would continue as normal and she would need to rest when she returned.” The goal was to provide stability and maintain trust for their children.

After the operation, Kate received her cancer diagnosis and began chemotherapy. The book details how she and Prince William initially informed Kate’s siblings, Pippa (42) and James (38), as well as their parents, Carole (71) and Michael (76). They then spoke with their children, George (12), Charlotte (10), and Louis (7).

“It was simply incredible,” a close confidant is quoted as saying in the book. “She explained to the three little ones that Mummy was sick and had to go back to hospital – but that she would be okay.” The conversation was reportedly remarkably emotional, with tears shed. “Everything Kate and William live for is these children. They are their whole world.”
