Fighting continues in and around Kupiansk as Russian forces intensify efforts to regain ground lost during Ukraine’s 2022 counteroffensive [[1]]. Despite challenging conditions – including attempted crossings of the Oskil River under forming ice – Ukrainian forces maintain control within the city, though pockets of Russian troops remain [[2]], [[3]]. Recent Russian aviation strikes target the Kupiansk and Lyman sectors as Moscow seeks to break through Ukrainian defenses.

Russian forces are attempting to cross the Oskil River north of Kupiansk, utilizing icy conditions to their advantage, though Ukrainian troops maintain control of both sides of the river within the city itself.

According to a military spokesperson, the Oskil River does not present a significant obstacle within Kupiansk, as Ukrainian forces hold positions on both banks. However, the situation is more challenging further north, where Russian troops are attempting to navigate the waterway as temperatures drop and ice begins to form.

“When ice appears on the river, they try to cross, and unfortunately, sometimes they succeed,” the spokesperson said. Despite these attempts, the overall situation north of Kupiansk remains relatively stable.

The developments come as Russia continues to intensify its efforts in the Kupiansk region. Previous reports indicated that Russian forces have been increasing pressure in the area, but attempts to directly penetrate the city have been unsuccessful. Ukrainian defense forces maintain full control of the situation and are thwarting enemy infiltration attempts.

Recent weeks have seen a surge in Russian aviation strikes targeting both the Kupiansk and Lyman sectors, as Moscow attempts to dislodge Ukrainian units from the left bank. These actions are seen as an effort to shift the dynamics of the fighting in this area of the front lines.

Ukrainian officials have refuted claims of Russian control over Kupiansk, dismissing them as propaganda. The spokesperson noted that the complete clearing of the city from remaining Russian forces could take several more weeks, as isolated groups of occupiers continue to operate within Kupiansk. As recently as December 12, Russian units were reportedly encircled despite Moscow’s claims of having “liberated” the city twice.

A successful Ukrainian counterattack previously resulted in the blocking of at least 200 Russian soldiers and the liberation of the Yubileiny residential area. This operation, planned since the fall, inflicted losses exceeding 1,000 casualties on the enemy and severed supply and reinforcement routes to the city.
