A key segment of Peru’s aspiring Autopista El Sol highway project is rapidly approaching completion, promising to substantially improve transportation and economic ties in the northern part of the country. The 12-kilometer stretch in the Lambayeque region is now 75% finished, representing a major acceleration in the $725 million, 475-kilometer project that began in 2009. Regional officials report the current phase of construction is on track to reduce travel times by nearly two-thirds, easing congestion and bolstering trade links between Trujillo, Chiclayo, Piura, and Sullana.
Construction on a key highway project in northern Peru is progressing rapidly, with the northern section of the Autopista El Sol now 75% complete. The roadway is intended to improve transportation links between several regions and boost economic activity in the area.
The 12-kilometer stretch, running from the Mocce oval to the San José bypass, is a crucial part of the larger 475-kilometer Autopista El Sol, a $725 million project connecting Trujillo, Chiclayo, Piura, and Sullana. While the overall project began in 2009 and is currently around 50% finished, the Lambayeque region segment is demonstrating significant momentum.
Regional Governor Jorge Pérez Flores recently inspected the work, noting that the current phase includes grading and paving. He stated that crews are on track to complete four kilometers of roadway each month from November through January. “What wasn’t accomplished in twelve years, we’ve been able to achieve in just one year of work,” Pérez Flores said. “Thanks to Covisol and all the entities involved, we can now say that these 12 kilometers will be traversable in just 14 minutes.”

In addition to the four-inch asphalt paving, construction is underway on two 30-meter bridges in Lambayeque, along with earthmoving, drainage installation, and platform preparation. Covisol, the project contractor, anticipates completion by March 2026, with a maximum delivery date of May 2026.
Once finished, the northern section will reduce travel time between districts from 40 minutes to just 14 minutes, diverting heavy traffic away from the urban center of Chiclayo. The improved access is expected to streamline traffic flow between Chiclayo, Lambayeque, and Reque, where an additional bridge is planned to further enhance logistical connections.
Governor Pérez Flores emphasized the collaborative effort behind the progress, citing the involvement of the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Transport and Communications, ENSA, EPSEL, the National Water Authority, the Land Titling Office, and local farmers. He noted that their cooperation facilitated the necessary technical processes.
The Lambayeque Regional Government believes the infrastructure improvements will benefit thousands of residents, reduce logistical costs for businesses, and accelerate interprovincial trade. The regional administration has reaffirmed its commitment to prioritizing transportation projects to enhance competitiveness and improve the quality of life for its citizens. This project underscores the region’s focus on infrastructure development as a driver of economic growth.
