Electric vehicles are becoming increasingly common on Latvian roads, a trend reflected in the country’s insurance market. Data from If Insurance shows that payouts for electric vehicle claims exceeded €344,000 in the past year, with an average claim value slightly above €1,000.

The most frequently insured EV brands in Latvia are BMW, Volkswagen, and Tesla. According to Ģirts Kubliņš, Head of Vehicle Claims at If Insurance, “The average age of insured electric vehicles in Latvia is relatively young – more than 50% are 0–2 years aged, 38% are 3–5 years old, 9% are 6–8 years old, and the remaining 3% are 9–11 years old.” This indicates a growing willingness among drivers to invest in the latest vehicle technology, as well as consider purchasing pre-owned EVs.

The number of insured electric vehicles doubled in 2025 compared to the previous year, resulting in over €344,000 in total payouts to policyholders. The largest single claim last year totaled €19,500, stemming from a direct collision with a moose that caused significant damage to the vehicle’s body – including doors, side panels, and windows.

Kubliņš noted that historical claims data reveals that EVs are most often involved in collisions with other vehicles. Minor damages, such as scratches sustained in parking lots, and weather-related incidents – including damage from falling trees or hail – are also common.

Like internal combustion engine vehicles, EVs frequently sustain tire and wheel damage when hitting potholes, particularly during the winter and spring thaw when road conditions are obscured. The cost of tire and wheel repairs can range from a few hundred to several thousand euros, depending on the vehicle make, tire size, and brand. Larger tires, for example, can cost upwards of €300 each.

In addition to these claims, If Insurance frequently processes payouts related to windshield damage caused by flying stones and debris, with an increase observed during the spring and summer months when roads are undergoing maintenance or haven’t been fully cleared. Windshield replacement claims often exceed €1,000.

As travel with EVs becomes more popular, it’s important to know that comprehensive (KASKO) insurance coverage extends beyond Latvia’s borders. “Just as with cars with internal combustion engines, insurance coverage for EVs is valid both in Latvia and abroad – according to the territory specified in the KASKO policy,” Kubliņš stated, adding that If Insurance has recorded incidents in Lithuania, Estonia, Poland, Germany, and the Scandinavian countries in the past year.
