Latvia’s Olympic hockey campaign got off to a tough start on Tuesday, falling 5-1 to a powerful United States team in Milan-Cortina. The loss, played at the 2026 Winter Olympics, marks a challenging beginning for the Latvian squad in Group C.
Renārs Krastenbergs scored the lone goal for Latvia, briefly tying the game 1-1 in the first period. Although, the Americans responded with a dominant second period, building a lead that Latvia couldn’t overcome.
The U.S. Offense proved too much to handle, with Brock Nelson netting two goals and Brady Tkachuk, Teijds Thompson, and Auston Matthews each adding one. Latvia’s goaltender, Elvis Merzļikins, faced a barrage of shots throughout the contest.
Adding a historic note to the game, 18-year-old Alberts Šmits became the youngest player ever to debut in Olympic hockey, surpassing the previous record held by Macklin Celebrini. Šmits entered the game during the opening shifts, making an immediate impact despite the final score.
Latvia will appear to rebound from this opening defeat as they continue play in the Olympic tournament. The team will need to quickly adjust and locate their rhythm against upcoming opponents.
