The Lausanne HC secured a thrilling overtime victory against the HC Ajoie on Tuesday, December 19th, extending their winning streak to six games and gaining crucial points in the league standings.
Fast-Paced First Period
The HC Ajoie has proven to be a challenging opponent for Lausanne throughout the season, and Tuesday’s contest was no exception. The game quickly established a high-tempo pace, with the first penalty of the match, called against Lausanne after 13 minutes, leading to a scramble in front of Kevin Pasche’s net. A potential opening goal for Ajoie emerged from the chaos. Just three minutes later, Drake Caggiula broke free on a counterattack, was hauled down, and managed to poke the puck past the goaltender while falling, tying the game at one apiece after 20 minutes of play.
The second period continued with the same intensity, as Théo Rochette gave Lausanne the lead with his 17th goal of the season just over a minute into the frame, during a 4-on-4 situation. Both teams traded offensive chances, with 14 shots on goal apiece in the middle period. Solid defense and a strong performance from Kevin Pasche kept Lausanne ahead, until a flurry in front of the net allowed Kyen Sopa to equalize for Ajoie.
Caggiula Delivers in Overtime
The third period began with a more cautious approach, with neither team able to seize control. That changed when Jason Fuchs showcased his skill, weaving through defenders before finding the back of the net to restore Lausanne’s advantage. The team, coached by Geoff Ward, then focused on defending their lead and looking for counterattack opportunities. However, with just 70 seconds remaining, Kilian Mottet, who finished the night with three points, leveled the score, sending the game to overtime.
Overtime saw both teams pressing for the winning goal, but it was Drake Caggiula who ultimately secured the victory for Lausanne with a perfectly placed wrist shot under the crossbar. The goal, his 13th of the season, marked Lausanne’s sixth consecutive win.
