The Lausanne Hockey Club overcame a sluggish start and a one-goal deficit to defeat the Zug 4-2 on Friday night, earning a vital three points in league play. Playing before a home crowd at the Vaudoise Arena, the Lions were initially outshot and struggled to generate offence against a Zug team missing several key contributors [[2]]. However, a dominant second and third period saw Lausanne rally for the win, fueled by a multi-point performance from Austin Czarnik.

A slow start couldn’t stop the Lions from mounting a dramatic comeback and securing a crucial three points. This recap is presented by our principal partner, Vaudoise Assurances.

A First Half to Forget

Lausanne struggled to find their rhythm early in the game. Coming off a frustrating 2-1 defeat in Fribourg the previous day, they failed to establish control in the opening minutes. Despite facing a Zug team missing key players – including goaltender Leonardo Genoni and forwards Dominik Kubalik and Tomas Tatar – the Lions didn’t register their first shot on goal until well into the first period. They created a couple of scoring chances through Drake Caggiula, but couldn’t capitalize.

Zug drew first blood when former Lausanne defenseman David Sklenicka found the back of the net. The Lions headed to the locker room at the end of the first period with just four shots on goal, clearly frustrated by their offensive struggles.

A Turnaround for the LHC

Just when things looked bleak, Lausanne flipped the script with a two-minute surge. Austin Czarnik and then Drake Caggiula leveled the score midway through the second period, injecting new life into the team. From that moment on, the momentum shifted decisively in Lausanne’s favor.

Twenty seconds into the third period, Czarnik struck again, giving Lausanne a 3-2 lead in a roaring Vaudoise Arena. Ten minutes later, defenseman Erik Brännström extended the lead with his ninth goal of the season, before Matias Oksanen sealed the victory with an empty-net goal.

The Three Stars of the Game

⭐️ Austin Czarnik: The LHC’s leading scorer was a force throughout the night, delivering what was arguably his most impactful performance of the season. With two goals and two assists, Czarnik was a key catalyst in the team’s remarkable comeback.

⭐️⭐️ Nathan Vouardoux: While he didn’t find the scoresheet, the Lausanne defenseman made his presence felt offensively, logging over 13 minutes of ice time and firing a game-high seven shots on goal.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ Kevin Pasche: The Lausanne netminder was solid between the pipes, keeping his team in the game during a difficult first period and making crucial saves to secure the three points.

What’s Next

The Lions have three games on the schedule next week. They’ll begin with a road trip to Rapperswil on Tuesday evening, followed by a home game against the SCL Tigers on Wednesday, November 26th. That game will be part of the Plays 4 Kids initiative. Geoff Ward’s squad will conclude their week with an afternoon matchup in the Emmental region against Langnau.
