Residents across Latvia are coming together for a nationwide community cleanup effort known as the Great Talka, with thousands volunteering to improve public spaces and strengthen neighborhood ties.
The initiative, which began on Saturday, April 25, 2026, has drawn participants from cities and towns including Liepāja, Bauska, and Riga, where volunteers are gathering to clean parks, streets, and shared areas.
In Liepāja, locals have been actively involved in the cleanup, with photos and videos showing residents working side by side to remove litter and beautify public areas. Organizers noted that despite ongoing efforts, some areas still require attention, but community spirit remains strong.
Meanwhile, in Bauska Municipality, more than 20 cleanup sites have been registered for the weekend event, reflecting widespread civic engagement. Authorities and volunteers alike emphasize that the Talka is not only about tidying up but also about fostering a shared sense of responsibility and belonging.
In a separate development, authorities reported the discovery of human remains during cleanup activities in one of the Talka sites, though no further details have been released pending investigation.
The Great Talka continues to grow as a tradition in Latvia, promoting environmental stewardship and community cohesion through collective action.
