Lithuania Condemns Potential Trump-Putin Meeting in Europe, Cites War Crimes Warrant

Lithuania strongly objected today to the possibility of a meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Hungary, asserting that there is no place for an internationally wanted war crimes suspect on European soil.

Speaking ahead of an EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting in Luxembourg, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kestutis Budrys delivered a sharp rebuke, stating, “We have to hold the principles of Europe that we all agree. And the only place for Putin in Europe is in The Hague, in front of the tribunal, not in any of our capitals.” He emphasized that Putin, subject to an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for alleged war crimes, should not be permitted to travel through European airspace. The ICC investigates and prosecutes individuals for genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity and the crime of aggression.

The objection follows reports that Trump and Putin discussed a potential face-to-face meeting during a phone call last Thursday, with Budapest suggested as a possible venue. Hungary is currently a member of the ICC, though it has indicated it will not enforce the warrant for Putin’s arrest and is set to withdraw from the court next June. This development comes as Trump has recently urged Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to negotiate with Russia, a position that contrasts with Ukraine’s stated commitment to defending its territory. Budrys added, “There is no place for war criminals in Europe. There is no way through Europe for war criminals to (attend) any events.” Lithuanian officials stated they will continue to advocate for a firm stance against Russia and uphold international legal obligations.

Representatives from both the U.S. and Russia are expected to begin preparations for a potential summit, despite the growing international opposition, according to a Putin aide.
