Lithuania is bracing for several days of frigid temperatures, with overnight lows reaching 34 degrees below zero Fahrenheit in some regions. While not record-breaking, the current cold snap echoes conditions not seen in over a decade, prompting concern for vulnerable populations and infrastructure. The persistent cold is attributed to a strong high-pressure system settled over the region, bringing clear skies but little respite from the deep freeze.
Lithuania is experiencing a prolonged cold snap, with temperatures plummeting to as low as 34 degrees below zero Fahrenheit overnight. While record lows remain distant, the current conditions are reminiscent of similar cold spells from 14 years ago, according to a local meteorologist.
The lowest temperatures were recorded at the Šeduvos and Joniškis meteorological stations, both registering 34 degrees below zero.
“It’s still far from record lows – historically, we’ve seen temperatures of 40 degrees below zero and even colder. However, similar cold temperatures were observed 14 years ago,” the meteorologist said.
Northern districts of Lithuania have been the most affected by the frigid temperatures, according to reports.
The weather is currently being influenced by a high-pressure system, bringing clear skies and only scattered thin clouds. Sunshine is expected throughout the day, with no snowfall. A moderate, but cold, north wind will prevail. After a frigid night, temperatures are expected to rise slightly during the day to between 15 and 20 degrees below zero, and 12 to 14 degrees below zero along the coast, according to a report from Lrytas.
Conditions are expected to remain largely unchanged Tuesday night, with clear and dry weather continuing. The north wind will subside to a barely perceptible breeze. The overnight low will be slightly warmer than Monday night, ranging from 21 to 26 degrees below zero, and 18 to 20 degrees below zero in some areas.
Snowfall is unlikely on Tuesday, with another sunny day anticipated. A north wind of 3 to 8 meters per second is expected. The highest temperature will fluctuate between 12 and 17 degrees below zero.
A cyclone will begin to move in from the west on Wednesday night, though cloud cover will remain minimal and no snow is expected. The wind will shift from the north-east to the east and increase to a moderate strength. The lowest temperature will range between 20 and 25 degrees below zero, with some areas in the west experiencing temperatures as high as 17 to 19 degrees below zero.
Wednesday will see Lithuania within the northern edge of a low-pressure system. The sky will become covered with thicker clouds, but sunshine is still possible in places. Significant snowfall is not anticipated. A strong north-easterly to easterly wind will blow. Temperatures in the afternoon will reach 11 to 16 degrees below zero.
