Stichting Lobi Health Center (SLHC) bestaat 58 jaar en blijft een belangrijke speler in de seksuele en reproductieve gezondheidszorg in Suriname. De organisatie kondigt bij haar jubileum verdere uitbreiding van preventieve diensten aan, waaronder de invoering van PrEP tegen hiv en nieuwe HPV-zelftesten voor baarmoederhalskankerscreening.
Lobi werd op 29 februari 1968 opgericht als initiatief voor familieplanning en is in de afgelopen decennia uitgegroeid tot een multidisciplinair public health centrum. Jaarlijks bereikt de instelling tienduizenden cliënten met preventieve zorg, testen en counseling, gezondheidsvoorlichting en trainingen.
Volgens de organisatie heeft zij een pioniersrol vervuld in toegankelijke SRHR-diensten, variërend van anticonceptie en hiv-testen tot screening op baarmoederhalskanker. Daarnaast richt Lobi zich op educatie en empowerment van jongeren, vrouwen en kwetsbare groepen, en levert zij een bijdrage aan nationale beleidsontwikkeling op het gebied van seksuele en reproductieve gezondheid en rechten (SRHR).
In lijn met de Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s) en nationale gezondheidsprioriteiten zet Lobi in op verdere uitbreiding van zorg in de districten. Via outreaches worden momenteel diensten aangeboden in negen van de tien districten. Ook wordt de nadruk gelegd op preventie en vroege detectie, met versterking van HPV- en baarmoederhalskankerscreening.
Een van de nieuwe initiatieven is de introductie van Pre-Expositie Profylaxe (PrEP) om hiv-infecties te voorkomen. Daarnaast worden kwalitatieve HPV-zelfafnametesten ingevoerd om de participatie aan screening te vergroten en drempels te verlagen.
Algemeen directeur Nensy Bandhoe noemt het jubileum een moment van reflectie en hernieuwde inzet. “We blijven bouwen aan een Suriname waarin iedereen toegang heeft tot respectvolle en kwalitatieve seksuele en reproductieve zorg, met aandacht voor privacy en vertrouwelijkheid.”
Lobi spreekt haar waardering uit naar partners zoals het ministerie van Volksgezondheid, Welzijn en Arbeid, PAHO, UNFPA en andere samenwerkingsorganisaties. Eind januari wist het team in drie dagen bijna 700 vrouwen te screenen op hoog-risico HPV-types, een actie die volgens de organisatie het belang van preventieve zorg onderstreept.

Founded on February 29, 1968, as a family planning initiative, Lobi Health Center has evolved into a comprehensive public health center serving tens of thousands of clients annually. The organization provides preventative care, testing, counseling, health education and training throughout Suriname.
Lobi Health Center has been a pioneer in accessible sexual and reproductive health (SRHR) services, offering a range of care from contraception and HIV testing to cervical cancer screenings. The center also focuses on education and empowerment programs for young people, women, and vulnerable populations, and contributes to the development of national policies related to SRHR. Access to comprehensive sexual and reproductive healthcare is a critical component of overall public health and well-being.
Aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and national health priorities, Lobi Health Center is working to expand care into more districts. Currently, outreach programs deliver services in nine of Suriname’s ten districts. A key focus remains on prevention and early detection, with increased emphasis on HPV and cervical cancer screening.
Among the new initiatives is the implementation of Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), a medication used to prevent HIV infection. The center will introduce qualitative self-collection HPV tests to increase participation in screenings and reduce barriers to access.
“We continue to build a Suriname in which everyone has access to respectful and quality sexual and reproductive care, with attention to privacy and confidentiality,” said Nensy Bandhoe, General Director of Lobi Health Center.
Lobi Health Center expressed gratitude to its partners, including the Ministry of Public Health, Welfare and Labor, PAHO, UNFPA, and other collaborating organizations. The organization recently screened nearly 700 women for high-risk HPV types in just three days in late January, highlighting the importance of preventative care.
