A local theater troupe is embracing a bit of unconventional casting for their upcoming production. Faced with a gender imbalance in their ensemble, the Drôles de comédiens will have a female actor playing a male role, according to president Stéphane Arrivé.

The company selected the play back in May and has been rehearsing weekly under the direction of Moussa, who Arrivé says has been instrumental in building confidence among the cast. “We laugh, we rehearse, but sometimes we can already see ourselves on stage – it’s not always easy without the sets,” Arrivé joked, adding that he and Maryse Massuc successfully run a children’s group with 23 budding actors currently enrolled. The president also extended an open invitation to any performers interested in joining the club.

A Play Full of Mischief

The play itself promises a humorous and occasionally risqué storyline. The plot centers on Jean and Cécile, a couple experiencing difficulties in their intimate life. On the advice of a friend, they decide to consult a specialist – a woman who happens to be an expert in adult films. Complicating matters further, Cécile’s parents unexpectedly arrive on the same evening!

“What interested me about this comedy was the opportunity to talk about all the solutions available to couples today to help them thrive,” explained Jean-Luc Lemoine. The production cleverly juxtaposes two generations of couples struggling with similar issues – the children and their parents – and explores differing approaches to navigating a crisis based on age, upbringing, and cultural background. This production arrives as audiences continue to seek out relatable and thought-provoking stories about modern relationships.
