Veteran Swiss basketball player Roberto Kovac has signed with Robur et Fides Varese, an Italian club competing in Serie B, extending his professional career. The 35-year-old confirmed the agreement Tuesday morning, signaling he isn’t ready to retire from competitive play.
Kovac’s move comes after his contract with Fribourg Olympic expired at the end of the last season, prompting a return to his family home in Ticino. He previously spent nine seasons with Fribourg Olympic, between 2011 and 2016, and again from 2023 to 2025, becoming a key figure in Swiss basketball.
Known for his shooting accuracy, Kovac also has a reputation for his strong personality. He was previously released by Massagno during the 2022-2023 season before joining Olympic, where he went on to win both the Swiss Cup and the league championship. As captain of the national team, Kovac also publicly voiced his frustration following a defeat against Denmark in the summer of 2023.
The signing of an experienced player like Kovac demonstrates Serie B’s growing appeal to established athletes, and highlights the continued demand for skilled players in European basketball leagues. His arrival is expected to bolster Varese’s competitive edge as they pursue promotion to Serie A.
