Pulitzer Prize-Winning Photojournalist Lynsey Addario Explores Life, Loss, and War in New Documentary
A new documentary, Love+War, premiering today, offers an intimate look into the life and career of Lynsey Addario, a Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist known for her decades of work documenting global conflict and its impact on civilians.
The film chronicles Addario’s balancing act between capturing harrowing images from war-torn regions – most recently and frequently Ukraine – and her responsibilities as a wife and mother. Addario has been kidnapped twice and faced numerous near-death experiences throughout her career, a reality that weighs heavily on her family. “I’m at a point in my career where I’ve had so many close calls,” Addario explained in a recent interview. “I think [I do] a constant sort of calculation of what I’ll risk my life for and how far I’ll go forward with what I’m willing to do.”
Love+War revisits pivotal moments in Addario’s work, including her coverage of maternal mortality in Sierra Leone, where she documented the tragic death of 18-year-old Mamma Sessay during childbirth. Addario notes a shift in her approach following a 2011 kidnapping in Libya, focusing more on the human stories of civilian victims rather than solely on the aftermath of combat. This focus on individual narratives has become increasingly important as the way photographs are shared and consumed has changed, with images now existing online indefinitely. Documentary filmmaking has become a powerful tool for raising awareness about global issues, as seen in other National Geographic productions.
Despite the immense risks and emotional toll, Addario remains resolute in her commitment to photojournalism. “There was never a world in which I would not do this work,” she stated. The documentary, created by Academy Award-winning filmmakers Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin, is expected to spark conversation about the ethics and challenges faced by conflict photographers.
Love+War will be available on National Geographic, Disney+, and Hulu following today’s premiere.
