Three eastern suburbs of Lyon experienced a night of gunfire early Sunday, April 26, 2026, with multiple shootings reported between 2:40 a.m. And 4:15 a.m. In Villeurbanne, Décines-Charpieu and Vénissieux.

In Villeurbanne, gunfire was heard repeatedly in the Georges-Lyvet neighborhood near the Laurent Bonnevay ring road. Authorities said a suspect was apprehended after a pursuit on an electric scooter while carrying a long firearm and a handgun. The Rhône prefecture praised the BAC unit’s “sang-froid and reactivity” in the arrest.

In Vénissieux, explosions were reported along Boulevard Joliot-Curie, with projectiles striking residential buildings. Similarly, in Décines-Charpieu, gunfire erupted on Rue Sully — a location previously involved in violence — where a mother and her child had been injured by stray bullets just days earlier.

Investigators confirmed that several bullets penetrated occupied apartments, though no injuries were reported from the overnight incidents. Police noted the pattern of intimidation-style shootings targeting building entrances and facades has turn into increasingly common in the Lyon metropolitan area.

A police union representative warned that while officers remain fully mobilized, staffing shortages are growing critical, with the Alliance syndicate stating the force is currently missing approximately 300 peace officers.

An investigation is underway to determine the full circumstances of the shootings, which occurred less than 24 hours after a separate incident in which a woman was grazed by a bullet in the leg while walking home with her two children in Décines-Charpieu.
