Kansas City Streetcar Extends Route, Connecting Union Station to UMKC
The Kansas City Streetcar’s Main Street Extension officially opened today, providing a 3.5-mile route from Union Station to the Plaza and the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC), expanding access to key areas of the city.
The extension marks the realization of plans announced six years ago to build upon the initial two-mile line that launched in 2016, connecting Union Station to the River Market. The original line quickly exceeded expectations in ridership, fueling demand for expanded routes. The new route travels through Midtown’s art district and energy corridor, offering a north-south connection across the city. This expansion is expected to spur further economic development along the Main Street corridor.
For generations, Kansas City had been without streetcar service since the last car rolled out in 1957, as the city prioritized automobile infrastructure. The eight-stop extension rebuilds a modern transportation system for Kansas City’s needs. Officials have planned community celebrations, including a grand opening ceremony at the Plaza stop and a celebration with a drone show at the UMKC Rec South Field this evening. Parking information for riders can be found on the Ride KC website. Transit-only lanes have been established along the route, with a minimum $50 fine for violations.
Looking ahead, the KC Streetcar Riverfront Extension is slated to open in early 2026, adding further connectivity to the city’s transportation network. Officials eagerly anticipate the completion of the Riverfront Extension, building on the success of the Main Street Extension and further enhancing Kansas City’s public transit options, as detailed in the city’s transportation master plan.
