Santiago, Chile — Commuters in the eastern Santiago suburb of Peñalolén are facing major transit disruptions this week as construction work forces temporary bus route changes across one of the area’s key thoroughfares.

Officials with Red Movilidad, the city’s public transportation network, confirmed Monday that several bus lines serving Avenida Las Parcelas will operate on adjusted schedules and detours starting April 27. The changes come as crews begin roadwork projects aimed at improving infrastructure along the busy corridor.

The affected routes include multiple high-traffic lines that connect Peñalolén to downtown Santiago and surrounding neighborhoods. While no complete service suspensions have been announced, riders should expect delays and modified stops during the construction period.

“We’re asking passengers to plan for extra travel time and check updated schedules before heading out,” a Red Movilidad spokesperson said. The agency has posted real-time route information on its website and mobile app to help riders navigate the temporary changes.

The disruptions highlight the growing pains of Santiago’s expanding public transit system, which has seen increased ridership in recent years. Avenida Las Parcelas serves as a critical east-west artery, linking residential areas with commercial centers and metro stations.

Local officials say the construction is part of a broader effort to modernize aging infrastructure across the capital. While the short-term inconvenience may frustrate daily commuters, transportation authorities emphasize the long-term benefits of improved road conditions and traffic flow.

No firm completion date has been set for the project, but Red Movilidad has indicated the detours will remain in place for “several weeks.” The agency is encouraging riders to sign up for service alerts to stay informed about any further adjustments.

For those relying on public transportation in Peñalolén, the coming days will require extra patience and planning as the city works to upgrade one of its busiest transit corridors.
