I’m running a little late today. The basement lock was giving me trouble, and as I was heading out with my bike, a neighbor stopped me for a chat.
Eva already has her notebook open and a pen ready.
“Today we’re going to practice summarizing one last time,” I tell her. “If that goes well, you have my permission to take on more challenging cases.”
The first case is straightforward – a couple who have viewed the property twice already.
“What are your initial thoughts?” I ask after the conversation.
“They’re hesitant about the number of rooms, but excited about the driveway – no parking worries – and they really love the beautiful details of the 1930s architecture.”
“Good. Write that down exactly as you said it. No sales pitch. I want facts.”
She nods, and I give her a thumbs up. This is working. When she then asks if I want coffee, I cautiously feel like things are going well between me and Eva.
Around 10:30, I step outside for some fresh air. I’m thinking about the holidays coming up. The office is quiet; many people are postponing decisions about buying or selling until after Christmas. A quick walk is a good idea. Maybe I’m also curious to see if Eva is managing okay on her own.
Mother
Back at the office, I see Maureen at her desk. She nods at me. Red lipstick. Festive. A cream-colored cardigan with glitter woven in. It really suits her. I’d like to compliment her, just as a colleague, but I don’t want to confuse her.
My phone vibrates. It’s my mother. Lunch: fennel soup, cucumber ribbons, and a mandarin orange. Feeling so good. Yogi tea tonight too. Good for digestion. Kiss.
I read it twice. What digestion? My mind is racing. The message that sticks with me is: we need to talk after Christmas. A. Real. Conversation. My mother lives on air. This isn’t right.
The afternoon passes without incident, no difficult questions. Just one viewer who said “maybe” and wants to revisit after the holidays.
“Go ahead and head home,” Maureen says to me and Eva. “I can handle things here. It’s so quiet. I can manage this last hour on my own.” She winks. And I finally mention how nice her cardigan looks.
Worries
When I get home, I put my keys in the bowl and start making tea. After that, I’ll make a quiche so I don’t have to cook on the 26th. I’ll eat half today, and the rest will be in the fridge for Friday. That’s fine, I think.
