Dutch journalist Stijn has departed his reporting role at current affairs program RTL Tonight after less than two months, citing a mismatch between the show’s increasingly serious tone and his own professional interests. The move comes after Stijn gained national recognition for his participation – and victory – as “The Mole” on the popular reality television series Wie is de Mol? and a subsequent transition to news reporting. His departure highlights a growing trend of media professionals reassessing their career paths to prioritize personal fulfillment and alignment with their values.
Stijn, a journalist known for his appearance on the reality television show Wie is de Mol?, has left his role at RTL Tonight after a brief stint as a reporter. He stated he found the program’s focus on heavy news topics didn’t align with his professional interests.
Following his reveal as “The Mole” on the popular Dutch game show, Stijn transitioned to RTL Tonight, taking on a reporting position. However, he quickly realized the program’s tone wasn’t a good fit. “I love variety, telling stories, and putting people at ease,” he explained. “I just discovered I’m looking for different things in my work.”
The recent shift towards a more journalistic approach at RTL Tonight required a different energy than Stijn was able to provide. “I am journalistically trained, but not someone who wants to deal with heavy news topics every day. That just doesn’t make me happy.”
After two months, Stijn’s departure was finalized. He described the decision as logical, stating, “It was a decision on their part, but one I thought, ‘yes, that actually makes sense.’” He felt it created space for work that better suited his personality and ambitions.
Looking back, Stijn described 2025 as “hysterical,” but in a positive way. “I am very grateful for this year,” he said, adding that he’s taking that gratitude with him as he moves forward, prioritizing choices that bring him energy and fulfillment. The move underscores a growing trend of media professionals seeking roles that align with their personal values and strengths.
Earlier this year, RTL Boulevard reported on Stijn’s friendship with Bridget Maasland, which blossomed after their participation in Wie is de Mol? He expressed disappointment when Maasland was eliminated from the competition.

Na zijn spectaculaire ontmaskering als Mol in Wie is de Mol? rolde Stijn vrijwel direct door naar RTL Tonight. Als verslaggever kreeg hij de kans om actuele verhalen te maken, maar al snel voelde hij dat de toon van het programma botste met wie hij is. “Ik hou van afwisseling, van verhalen vertellen, van mensen op hun gemak stellen”, zegt hij. Juist daar ontdekte de presentator dat hij andere dingen zoekt in zijn werk.
De vernieuwde, meer journalistieke koers van RTL Tonight vroeg om een andere energie dan Stijn kon en wilde geven. “Ik ben journalistiek geschoold, maar niet iemand die elke dag zware nieuwsthema’s wil behandelen. Dat maakt mij gewoon niet vrolijk.”
Na twee maanden viel het doek. Geen drama, maar een logisch moment, aldus Stijn. “Het was een besluit van hen, maar eentje waarvan ik dacht: ja, dat klopt eigenlijk wel.” Voor hem voelde het als ruimte maken voor werk dat beter past bij zijn persoonlijkheid en ambities.
Terugkijkend noemt Stijn 2025 zelf ‘hysterisch’, maar wel op een goede manier. “Ik ben heel erg dankbaar voor dit jaar.” En die dankbaarheid neemt hij mee naar wat komen gaat: minder moeten, meer kiezen en vooral doen waar hij energie van krijgt.
