Mark Ruffalo Open to Solo Hulk Movie, But Rights Issues Remain
Actor Mark Ruffalo has expressed his desire for a standalone Hulk movie within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, though significant hurdles regarding the character’s distribution rights continue to complicate the possibility.
Speaking with GQ, Ruffalo acknowledged the long-standing issue with Universal’s ownership of the Hulk’s film rights. “Yeah, I’d love to have a solo Hulk movie,” he said. “I don’t know if you know the story of that, but it’s not really owned by Marvel; it’s a Universal property.” He admitted uncertainty about whether a solo film will ever materialize, despite ongoing discussions. This situation is unique among the original six Avengers, as Ruffalo is the only one without a dedicated solo film.
While Marvel Studios successfully negotiated a deal with Sony to integrate Spider-Man into the MCU, the Hulk’s situation presents a different challenge. Marvel can currently utilize the character in ensemble films like the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day, lessening the immediate need for a rights agreement with Universal. However, a solo film could allow for a deeper exploration of Bruce Banner’s character, particularly following the introduction of his son, Skaar, in the She-Hulk series – a storyline many fans are eager to see developed. The potential for a Hulk movie also faces uncertainty given the approaching conclusion of the Multiverse Saga with Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, and the subsequent planned “soft reset” of the MCU. Marvel Studios has not yet confirmed Ruffalo’s involvement in those films, but his presence would be expected. Officials have stated they will continue to explore all options for the character’s future.
