Marvel to Spotlight Cyclops in New Comic Series, Aiming for Wolverine-Level Popularity
Marvel Comics announced today a new Cyclops series intended to elevate the X-Men leader to a similar level of prominence as the iconic Wolverine, with the first issue scheduled for release on February 11, 2025.
The five-issue series, revealed earlier this month at New York Comic Con, will focus on a standalone story designed to comprehensively explore Scott Summers’ character. X-Men line editor Tom Brevoort explained the goal is to create a narrative equivalent to the original Wolverine limited series, offering a deep dive into Cyclops’ history and motivations. “The intention with this was to do for Cyclops, was to do a Cyclops story that was the equivalent of the original Wolverine limited series that tells you everything you need to know about this guy in one story,” Brevoort said.
The storyline will see Cyclops crash-land in a remote wilderness after his visor is shattered, leaving him struggling to control his immense optic blasts while protecting a young mutant from the Reavers, a group of cyborg mercenaries led by Donald Pierce. This new direction for Cyclops comes after a period where the character underwent a controversial storyline involving a revolutionary path, a direction Marvel later revised. Fans have long debated Cyclops’ role within the X-Men, and this series aims to solidify his position as a central figure. You can learn more about the X-Men’s history at Marvel.com.
The announcement coincides with the ongoing “Age of Revelation” storyline, which fast-forwards the Marvel Universe ten years into the future, and sets the stage for the X-Men to prevent a catastrophic future. This new series is part of a broader effort to empower the next generation of mutants and reshape the fate of mutantkind, as detailed in the official Marvel press release.
