Jamaica’s national team players are reportedly opposing a potential call-up for forward Mason Greenwood, citing concerns over fairness and team commitment. The debate centers around Greenwood’s eligibility through his Jamaican grandparents and his previous international appearances for England.
Greenwood, who has one cap for the English national team, recently explored switching his international allegiance to Jamaica, the country of his ancestral roots.
Jamaica’s head coach, Steve McClaren, had expressed interest in including Greenwood in the squad for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers and the 2026 CONCACAF Gold Cup. However, the necessary paperwork for the switch was not completed at that time.

A call-up came in September ahead of matches against Trinidad & Tobago and Bermuda, but Greenwood declined, reportedly holding out hope for a future recall to the England squad.
With Jamaica preparing for a crucial Intercontinental Playoff in March to secure one of the final spots in the expanded 2026 World Cup field, the Jamaican Football Federation (JFF) has revisited the possibility of adding Greenwood to the roster.
Greenwood is currently enjoying a prolific season with Marseille, having scored 33 goals in 53 appearances, including 22 league goals that made him the top scorer in Ligue 1 last season. His potential addition would undoubtedly bolster Jamaica’s attacking options.
However, the JFF’s intentions have met with resistance from current national team players, who believe that bringing in Greenwood at this stage would be unfair to those who have consistently fought for the team’s progress.
“The (JFF) are obsessed with big names and trying to recruit more players. They want to have the best team on the pitch, but I’ve told the JFF: ‘If a player isn’t willing to commit for the final round of qualifying, unless they’re injured, I don’t understand why they should join the group in March or at the end of the season if we qualify.’ That shouldn’t happen,” midfielder Isaac Hayden told The Athletic.
“Greenwood’s quality is undeniable, looking at his goals. But this is about principle and integrity. If a player suddenly gets called up just because of the World Cup, it will be a joke. There will be a lot of talk about the player and also the federation that allowed it to happen,” added the Queens Park Rangers player.
Similar sentiments were echoed by Charlton Athletic defender Amari’i Bell, who expressed concern that the arrival of Greenwood or other players of Jamaican descent could disrupt the team’s harmony.
“A lot of us have been grinding for years, sacrificing sweat and tears for this country, with the dramas that have happened behind the scenes. We’ve all had to deal with that. It wouldn’t be fair to the players who have been through the process and can no longer play in a World Cup. It’s a bit controversial,” Bell stated.
