A young doctor in Cianjur has died after contracting suspected measles with complications, Indonesia’s Ministry of Health confirmed, highlighting the growing risk the virus poses to unvaccinated adults.

The 26-year-old physician, identified as AMW, initially experienced fever and a red rash before developing severe breathing difficulties. Medical officials reported that the case progressed to suspected measles complicated by pneumonia, ultimately leading to the doctor’s death.

Health authorities emphasized that measles is no longer considered a childhood-only illness, noting increasing transmission among adults who lack immunity. The Indonesian Association of Internal Medicine Specialists (PAPDI) has pointed out that gaps in vaccination coverage are contributing to the virus’s resurgence in older populations.

Officials urged unvaccinated individuals, particularly those in high-exposure professions like healthcare, to review their immunization status. The case serves as a stark reminder that vaccine-preventable diseases can carry fatal consequences regardless of age when protection is incomplete.
